Despite coalitions being a common feature at the municipal/local level in South Africa since the mid-1990s, there has never been a coalition government at the national level. At the provincial level, coalitions have governed briefly in the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. Political analysts and pollsters have pointed to the possibility of coalition governments becoming a reality following the upcoming 2024 general elections, both nationally and in some provinces.
