In the run-up to the 2021 local government elections, we teamed up with Radio786 to host a 3-part debate series on youth and political education.

Our Executive Director, Minhaj Jeenah spoke to various guest speakers on the role of young people in our politics.

Young people played a particularly important role in the anti-apartheid struggle.

However, their presence has been notably missing from the political landscape. The SACP General Secretary, Dr Blade Nzimande, has called for focused political education programmes.

And with only weeks left for local government elections, an analysis of the voters’ roll shows that young people are increasingly rejecting party politics. The number of young people who are able to vote and have registered to vote has declined sharply since the last election.

In this first episode, Minhaj is joined by guests:

  • Saabik Kader (ANC)
  • Tami Jackson (DA)
  • Alex Hotz (activist)
