In 2020, My Vote Counts released a report unpacking the public funding of South Africa’s political parties. Since then, there have been fundamental changes to the legislation that governs public funding.
This report seeks to provide a background and comment on recent developments and changes to the law, followed by an overview of how political party funding is governed in South Africa. I addition, we explore what parties have received in public funding between 2014 and 2021, as well as the challenges in accessing information about public funding of political parties.
