My Vote Counts (MVC) is looking for a skilled and thoughtful writer to craft our upcoming Annual Report. This isn’t your typical institutional document – we want a compelling narrative that brings to life our work over the past year, and how it contributes to our broader vision of a democracy where every individual has an equal say in the decisions that affect their lives.

The report will be set against the backdrop of a defining moment in South Africa’s democracy—a period marked by shifts in power, the emergence of coalition politics, deepened public scrutiny, and expanded opportunities for people-led change. We want the report to reflect this context while telling the story of MVC’s role in this evolving landscape.

The writer will work closely with our team, as well as a graphic designer, to craft a coherent and engaging narrative across our three focus areas: money in politics, political systems, and democracy from below. The narrative will highlight our strategic campaigning, thought leadership, advocacy, social movement support, and litigation.

We’re looking for someone who:

  • has strong narrative non-fiction, long-form and/or investigative journalism experience.
  • can synthesise interviews, reports, and other materials into a clear and compelling narrative.
  • has a deep understanding of South African politics and civil society.
  • understands the context of MVC and its work.
  • can work independently but collaboratively with our team.
  • ideally, has some experience of annual report writing for non-profit organisations.

Timeframe: The deadline for the report will be 31 August 2025.

Deliverables: One full-length narrative-style annual report (length and structure to be discussed).

If you’re passionate about democracy, civil society and good at telling powerful stories, we’d love to hear from you.

To apply: Send the following to info@myvotecounts.org.za with the subject “ANNUAL REPORT WRITER” by 7 July 2025:
